INVITATION TO NATIONAL EDUCATION DISCUSSION ON COVID-19 EDUCATION DISCUSSION
Date: Thursday 23rd July, 2020
The covid-19 pandemic took its toll on the foundation of our education (Basic and Secondary) and the entire education sector. For the past for 4 months, schools have been shut down thereby forcing students who were supposed to be in school learning to stay at home.
While the shutdown was on, education stakeholders from the Ministry of Education, Development Partners and Civil Society Organizations, worked behind closed doors, consulting and meeting on the best ways to keep students learning while at home. These meetings produced the development of the frameworks for students continued learning while they stayed at home, Development of Nigeria Education Sector COVID19 response Strategy and the finalization/inauguration of the National Enrollment Drive Steering Committee.
Concerned with the educational development of the students and pupils, on the 28th of June 2020, the Federal Government announced the opening of schools to certificate classes comprising of First School Leaving, Junior Secondary, and Senior Secondary Certificates, a decision which was later revised by the Ministry for the fear of endangering the life of students in the cause of examinations.
While the Federal Government looks forward to the schools reopening, the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education For All (CSACEFA), saddled with the responsibility of advocating for quality and inclusive education and guided by the vision of a Nigeria Guaranteed of quality education and dignity for all is organizing a National CSOs online discussion; COVID-19: Towards School Reopening: Mobilizing Communities on ensuring safety compliance in schools and Home Based Learning.
The purpose of the discussion is to better inform and strengthen the Civil Society Organizations, Parents, schools’ Administrators, Students and other stakeholders on their roles in supporting and promoting Covid-19 safety guidelines in schools, Community and at home.
We hope that at the end of the discussion, stakeholders will be better informed and equipped with the various COVID19 response strategies, guidelines and policies, Increase access to continue learning at home and strengthened synergy between government and Civil Society Organizations in providing quality and inclusive learning for students in basic and secondary education.
